The History of Wolverhampton
Wolverhampton was given city status along with the cities of Brighton, Hove and Preston in December 2000 when the government pronounced them ‘Millennium Cities’. The town, founded by Lady Wulfruna (natives of Wolverhampton are called ‘Wulfrunians’) who discovered the area in 985AD is now a vibrant and multi-cultural centre located in the county of the West Midlands.
The city is steeped in history, thanks in large part to its role in the industrial revolution, when in the 19th century heavy industrialisation of the area brought with it black soot and pollution, giving the area the name ‘the Black Country’. It was at this time that the city grew as an area for mining coal and limestone and the production of motorcycles and cars, including the first vehicle to hold the ‘Land speed record’ at over 200mph. The main industry today, of course, is within the service sector.
Sticking with cars, Wolverhampton was also the first city in the UK to introduce automated traffic lights. In 1927 the first set was switched on in Princes Square allowing the people of Wolverhampton to lead the way in safer driving, the rest of the UK quickly following suit.
But Wolverhampton is not just industrially forward thinking. The city has also carved a name for itself as a producer of musical talent. Among those who originated in the city are; Slade, Cornershop, The Mighty Lemon Drops, Beverly Knight, Goldie and Robert Plant, proving that the city ought not to be overshadowed by Birmingham.
